service to the Rotary and his example as an individual who lives the

creed “service above self.” Present for this ceremony were Barbara

Kennedy, Paul’s widow; Craig Harris, Paul’s son; and fellow Rotarian from

the Newport Beach Sunrise Club. Congratulations.

the Year, will share her experiences as a member of the U.S. Olympic

Team, which won the silver medal in the women’s international 470 class

at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney at the noon Yachtsmen’s Luncheon on

Wednesday. The luncheon will be held at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club,

WE GET LETTERS: I received this letter from Melinda Williams:

“Think back to the earlier days of the YMCA, when you and Dave Harding

would come outside to the pool to watch swim team practice and meets. One

of those children was Cameron Harding’s good buddy “Robbie” Williams.

“From that beginning, Rob went on to swim for Nova Aquatics, at Harbor

High, Corona del Mar High school record holder, part-time at USC and

around the world as a British Commonwealth ambassador. . . . But this is

not the reason for my note.

“While at Corona del Mar, he cut out your column announcing the Rotary

Ambassadors Scholarships. He called and was told to apply when he was in

college. While at Newport Harbor High School-Corona de Mar, he attended

UC Irvine, taking advanced courses in French, German, etc. He graduated

from Corona del Mar in 1998 and was accepted to USC with full junior

class standing. By this time, he was fluent in three languages and

working on additional, majoring in international relations, applied to be

a Los Angeles Rotary Club candidate for this scholarship . . . and won!

“Rob graduated from USC in May of 2000 and in January flew to get his

master’s degree at the University of Auckland in New Zealand this year as

a Rotary Scholar. (He also received an additional year’s university grant

to continue at USC upon his return.)

“Had it not been for your article, this would not have been possible.

Now his name is permanently etched in the Wall of Scholars at USC because

of this honor. Thank you so much. I just wanted you to know that even one

newspaper column can change lives.”

WORTH REPEATING: From Thought for the Day, e-mailed by Greg Kelley of

the Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “The greatest discovery of

any generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering the

attitudes of their minds.” -- Albert Schweitzer
