SAN DIEGO -- Newport Harbor High’s Sailors, first in their pool on
Friday, finished sixth in the 16-team championship bracket Saturday at
the San Diego Tournament of Champions at the University of San Diego.
After a 3-0 run on Friday, including Bullard of Fresno, the Sailors
split four matches, punishing La Costa Canyon and Poway, but falling
victim to Capistrano Valley in the quarterfinals, and to Mater Dei in the
fifth-place final.
Senior Blake Tippett, bound for USC after graduation, earned
All-Tournament honors, with 38 kills over the course of Saturday’s games.
The Sailors put La Costa Canyon away, 15-7, 15-10, with Tippett’s 14
kills the focal point.
In a 15-4, 17-15 loss to Capistrano Valley, Tippett had 11 kills and
Greg Perrine chipped in with eight kills.
Tippett had 14 kills in a 15-9, 15-11 victory over Poway, and against
Mater Dei in the fifth-place match, he had 13 kills, as did teammate
Christian Berg-Hansen in the 15-11, 15-17, 15-8 setback.
Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said he was pleased with his team’s
performances, and believes the Sailors are on a course to create some
serious noise in the CIF Playoffs.
Harbor, which hosts Huntington Beach Wednesday night in a nonleague
duel, is 5-3.
