Five Fountain Valley teams net NJB playoff victories
Five Fountain Valley National Junior Basketball boys’ teams won their
respective playoff games last Sunday to advance in the 2001 Championship
Series.
The Jabberwalkies chalked up another Division I victory by routing the
Brea Lakers, 50-32. Chris Debowski turned in another top-notch
performance with 22 points, seven steals and five rebounds. Jeff Millard
contributed eight points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and Matt
Derocili combined nine points with seven rebounds.
In addition, Sean Gates and Taylor Grosso led the way on defense
combining for 12 rebounds. Tyler Killian and Ryan Stehle teamed for seven
points and three steals.
DIVISION II
FV Bruins 32, Villa Park 29
Kevin DeHerrera scored three of his team-high 12 points in overtime,
and Jadeson Vo had the other basket, as the Bruins advanced to play in
Sunday’s championship game (10:45 a.m.) at Newport Harbor High. DeHerrera
also grabbed seven rebounds, Ketan Chopra added nine points and five
rebounds, Brandon Kurz scored five points and grabbed five rebounds and
Jordan Potter and Tyler Freleaux led the defense.
FV Knicks 48, Villa Park 24
Tyler Petry and Chase Barnes each scored eight points during a
decisive second quarter, as the Knicks remained undefeated in series
action. Petry led all scorers with 19 points, Barnes totaled 10, Matt
James led the defense with seven steals and eight rebounds, Ben Bofill
scored six points and Michael Bird chipped in a pair of key baskets. The
Bruins will play in Sunday’s championship final (9:15 a.m.) at Century
High in Santa Ana.
DIVISION III
FV Lakers 37 South HB 23
In a series semifinal matchup, Tsubasa Furukawa scored 12 points to go
along with 13 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Ray Strazzulla
scored 10 points and had eight steals, five rebounds and two assists,
Lucas Vandeman had 12 rebounds, five points and four steals. The Lakers
will play in Sunday’s championship final (11:15 a.m.) at Tustin High.
Pressure defense by Strazzulla and Dan Rivera helped the Lakers jump out
to a 17-5 first quarter lead and they were never threatened.
SEVENTH-GRADE ALL-NET
FV No. 2 51, Villa Park No. 2 32
Ben Han led all scorers with 17 points, Adam Czajkowski had seven
points and 10 rebounds, Sam Bridges had nine points along with six
boards, Freddy Estrada matched five points with five rebounds and the
defensive play of Brad Dawson, Jimmy Flanagan, Sean Carroll, Bryan
Bissonette and John Kim, keyed Fountain Valley’s win.
