Hopefully, the state will provide funds to purchase the Bolsa Chica

mesa (“Harman wants state to purchase Bolsa Chica mesa,” Feb. 22). The

mesa and wetlands are too important to lose to development. A mesa

preservation plan would safeguard numerous threatened species and help

to protect lowland wildlife as well.

Assemblyman Tom Harman should be congratulated for taking action on

this issue. The state Legislature should approve Harman’s bill and send

it to the governor for his signature in order to guarantee the future of

the entire Bolsa Chica.

Detloff caught in possible conflict of interest

Now that the terms of the agreement between Signal and the Amigos de

Bolsa Chica have become public, it explains a lot. My problem is the

actions of City Councilwoman Shirley Detloff who signed the agreement.

Detloff took part in all Bolsa Chica discussions and actions on the

City Council. It is now clear that she had agreed to support the

developer’s plan. Having signed the secret agreement, Detloff had a

clear conflict. She should have abstained from any participation on Bolsa

Chica matters.

On several votes, her’s was the deciding vote. Few things are more

repulsive to me than public officials voting on matters where they have a

conflict of interest.
