Softball: CdM victim of perfecto

CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar softball team will remember its
2001 home opener, but for all the wrong reasons.
Notre Dame Academy junior pitcher Patricia Gonzales threw a perfect
game to lead the visiting Regals to a 7-0 nonleague victory Tuesday.
The Sea Kings committed three errors in the first inning, allowing
five runs off two hits.
“(Gonzales) just shut us down,” CdM Coach Terry Christiano said. “In
the first inning, we weren’t here. We gave up errors. We should’ve given
up maybe two runs in the first inning.”
Of the 21 outs, Gonzales recorded six strikeouts, fielded five
grounders and caught a line drive.
CdM (2-1) hit just one ball out of the infield, when designated hitter
Casey Bunney belted a shot deep to left in the third inning, but it was
caught.
“What can you do?” Christiano said. “(But), I can show the girls
they’re not ‘Queen Almighty.’ They still need to work and work hard. It’s
not going to be a cakewalk because they won a couple of ballgames.”
CdM sophomore Alissa Zoelle relieved senior Mijanou Pham to hold the
Regals (1-0) scoreless through the final five innings.
CdM plays at La Quinta Thursday at 3 p.m., before resuming in the
Costa Mesa Tournament Saturday against Back Bay rival Newport Harbor.
