LOS ALAMITOS - Newport Harbor High boys swimming coach Brian

Kreutzkamp has probably never forgotten a loss any quicker than Tuesday’s

123-47 nonleague setback to host Los Alamitos.

Newport Harbor (0-1) swam all sophomores and had no club swimmers for

the meet.

“Our club swimmers are preparing for nationals and we held out the

other senior and junior swimmers for Corona del Mar on Monday,”

Kreutzkamp said. “We got to see a lot of new faces swim for us, but most

of these guys will be back swimming frosh/soph when we go up against

CdM.”

Not in attendance, among others, were such standouts as Aaron Peirsol,

Ryan Lean, Joey Snelgrove, Steven Jendrusina, Peter Belden, and Ryan

Cook. According to Kreutzkamp, all will be back in action when Newport

hosts the Sea Kings at 3 p.m.

With the Griffins dominating the meet, a few Sailors still managed to

crack the top three in some events.

Sophomore newcomer Andrew Cole was quick to receive praise from

Kreutzkamp for his work in the 100-yard backstroke as well as 100

freestyle.

Cole was Newport’s lone winner, taking the 100 back with a time of

57.04, bettering the pack by more than four seconds. He also placed

second in the 100 freestyle with a 51.78.

“He’s a transfer from Salt Lake City and we’re very excited to have

him,” Kreutzkamp said. “Nobody really pushed him in the backstroke and

with him swimming well there, that will allow the coaches the freedom of

moving Peirsol around to other events.”

Nathan Weiner took second in the 50 free (24.19) and third in the 100

free (53.38), while Jonathan Huang was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.15).

“Needless to say, we’ll be fully loaded when CdM comes to our pool,”

Kreutzkamp said. “I know the kids always get fired up when the Back Bay

rivals come to our pool. It should be fun.”
