The process for appointing commissioners has never been an easy one.
In fact, it can be quite messy. Last Monday’s action on the appointment
of commissioners was abysmal, and I take full responsibility for it
getting out of hand. I am sorry, and I apologize for the manner in which
I conducted myself. Truly, it was not my style. While I do like to run a
tight meeting, and may, because of that, step on some people’s toes, it
is my style to encourage and give fair and equal access to the process. I
truly believe in the sharing of power, the equally important views of my
fellow council members, and in giving everyone a hearing.
I do, however, sincerely hope that the process does not cloud the
appointments made. I do believe that we have appointed commissioners who
will work well for and on behalf of the community. I am pleased with the
commissions, which were, in the midst of the chaos, supported by the
majority. Let us work together to assure them success.
I will continue to work hard to make Costa Mesa a better place to
live, work and play, and I will continue to support those things I hold
dear. I will strive to always give a fair and open hearing to my fellow
council members, and every citizen, resident, business owner and
applicant with business before the City Council. I am sorry for last
Monday’s process, and ask for your support as we go forward and while I
continue to learn this role called mayor.
Together we can create an even better Costa Mesa.
