Sailors win, 1-0

NEWPORT BEACH - Duke Burchell came up with a huge save in the
waning moments to protect Trey Meek’s fourth-minute bullet and the
Newport Harbor High boys soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory over visiting
Laguna Hills Monday, knocking the losers out of the CIF Playoffs picture
and keeping the Sailors’ flickering hopes for a Sea View League
championship alive.
The Tars, who improved to 4-5-6, 2-2-3 in league, will be at Aliso
Viejo Friday with second place and a berth in the playoffs in all
liklihood at stake.
Burchell, who had five saves in all, came up with a spectacular stop
in the last minute of play to offset the tending of rival Eric Reed, who
had nine saves for Laguna Hills.
Meek, however, got to Reed in the early going with his shot off an
assist from Tyler Simmons from 18 yards out, the ball never getting
higher than four inches off the ground and catching the standout Laguna
Hills goalie flat-footed.
For Meek, a senior, it was his sixth goal in six league starts.
Also with sterling all-around efforts for the Sailors were Juan
Gonzales, David Marshall and Brandon Gould.
