A man who was caught in a rip current at 32nd Street in Newport Beach
was rescued by lifeguard Josh van Egmond at about 5 p.m. Sunday, said Jim
Turner, lifeguard captain at the Newport Beach Fire Department.
“The man was on a boogie board and was swimming against the current
near a jetty and was being pulled out in the ocean,” Turner said. “It’s
like he was swimming up the river. So Josh swam out in the cold water,
picked him up and brought him ashore, and the man is perfectly fine. If
we hadn’t been around, then there would have been a problem.”
