Girls water polo: Eagles top T-wolves
IRVINE - Estancia High senior Somer Flaherty scored to force
overtime, then assisted on the game-winner by Katie Menden in the first
of two three-minute overtime periods as the Eagles earned a 7-6
double-overtime girls water polo win over Pacific Coast League host
Northwood Wednesday.
Estancia (3-9, 1-2 in league) was down, 5-1, at halftime. But with
newly appointed coach John Carpenter, filling in after Michele Spanley
resigned, directing his players, the Eagles shut down the Timberwolves
and prevailed for their first league victory.
Flaherty had four goals, Menden two and Jenea Gudvangen added another,
while senior goalie Anna Rasmussen keyed the defense with 10 saves.
“Rasmussen was the key to the game,” Carpenter said. “She made some
big saves in the second half and three critical ones in overtime.”
