NEWPORT-MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD WRAP-UP
WHAT HAPPENED:
The school board on Tuesday approved Orange Coast Middle College
High’s plan to apply for a Digital High School grant from the state.
WHAT IT MEANS:
Middle College High School will be the last school in the district to
get online. Once it is done, all six high schools will have the computer
technology.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Three elementary school students were honored Tuesday for bookmarks
they created for the district’s Authors Book Festival. Timothy Sampley, a
kindergartner at Kaiser Primary Center; Fendi Wang, a third-grader at
Lincoln Elementary School; and fifth-grader Shelby Ferris from Davis
Education Center were introduced, and their winning bookmark designs were
presented.
WHAT IT MEANS:
The bookmarks are to promote and celebrate the fourth annual festival,
which will be held Feb. 8. The event will bring 39 authors of children’s
literature to schools to speak to the students.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Newport Coast parent Rick Dalton said he attended the board meeting
ready to put the district’s feet to the fire with questions about how
close to completion the new elementary school really is. But after
hearing Mike Fine, the district’s assistant superintendent of business
services, present an update on the project, Dalton said he was reassured.
WHAT IT MEANS:
District staff assures the community there will be no further delays
and that Newport Coast Elementary School will open Feb 26.
