The Estancia High girls basketball team outscores host Aliso Niguel,
20-4, in the first quarter as the Eagles roll to a 66-37 Pacific Coast
League victory. Junior guard Vivi Rodriguez scores a career-high 21
points on 9-of-17 shooting. Jill Black finishes with 14 points and Amy
Deming adds 11. Point guard Jessica Waltz scores 12 points and grabs 10
rebounds.
The Estancia boys soccer team drops host Aliso Niguel, 5-1, as Eagles
goalie Brad Wayman comes up with two spectacular saves on penalty kicks.
Gerson Salgado scores twice and Estancia gets single goals from Willie
Alfaro, Greg Austin and Carlos Silva.
Despite a foot injury to Andree Verhulst, the Newport Harbor girls
basketball team defeats visiting Santa Margarita, 50-34. Every Harbor
player scores with M.E. Clayton leading the Tars with a game-high 14
points. Breanna Badorek finishes with eight points, while Mindi Alford
scores five.
The Corona del Mar girls basketball team comes back from 16 down to
stun host Irvine, 53-48. The Vaqueros open a 20-4 lead as CdM Coach Garth
Flint attempts to inspire his starters by putting them on the bench. The
strategy works as Melissa Ford, Jennifer Gardner, Lindsay Warmington and
Nicole Albano return to lead the rally. Warmington scores 19 and Ford
adds 13. Gardner finishes with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
The Southern California College men’s basketball team upsets Azusa
Pacific University, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, 83-75. Kevin Carlson scores
a season-high 33 points, hitting 10 of 17 from the field, including 5 of
10 from three-point land. Carlson is 8 for 8 at the free-throw line. Eric
Walker scores 13, while Mike Ruble finishes with 10.
Looking back, 10 years ago this week.
The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team builds a 32-8 halftime lead
en route to a 68-30 victory over Laguna Hills. Olivia DiCamilli scores 25
points and Rachel Ward adds 11. They team for 15 of the 16 Mustangs’
points in the first quarter.
Estancia’s Leah Braatz grabs a school-record 21 rebounds to lead the
Eagles to a 62-32 victory over Trabuco Hills. Senior guard Melody Earle
pours in 22 points, while Patrice Lumpkin and Monique Sweet each score
10.
The Corona del Mar girls soccer team posts a 3-1 win over host
University. Junior Lisa Boatman nets the first CdM goal just 25 seconds
into the game. Tracy Schriber boots one in to break a 1-1 tie. And,
freshman Stefanie Hughes scores the insurance goal six minutes into the
second half.
Corona del Mar’s Jon Upham, who scores a team-high 23 points and grabs
a game-high 20 rebounds, leads the Sea Kings boys basketball team past
University, 68-61. Doug Hesse injures his ankle, but scores nine points
and grabs seven rebounds. Todd Kehrli fills in and nails 4 of 6 free
throws in the final 1:15.
Estancia’s Matt Fuerbringer scores eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter as the host Eagles pull away from Trabuco Hills and win,
67-57. Son Ly leads the Eagles with 22 points, while Mike Haas, who nets
three three-pointers, adds 17.
Orange Coast College’s Ericka Manning and Lisa Orosco team for 37
points to lead the Pirates women’s basketball squad to a 76-34 victory
over visiting Cypress. Manning hits 11 of 14 from the field en route to
24 points and 10 rebounds. Orosco scores 13 points and grabs nine
rebounds.
