Newport Harbor High wrestler Jason Deere takes a 7-0 decision over

Kelly Richardson of Millikan to win his second straight heavyweight

championship in the Estancia Tournament. Deere’s win helps the Sailors

finish 12th with 71.5 points. Estancia finishes 22nd out of 44 teams with

45 points. Senior Andre Barrios finishes in fourth to lead the Eagles.

Unseeded Newport Harbor sophomore Rigo Pinon is third at 112 pounds and

Matt Large comes up big with a fifth-place finish among 103-pounders.

Costa Mesa’s girls basketball team works its way to a 50-47 win over

host Newport Harbor. The Mustangs’ Kristina Watanabe completes an

effective defensive performance allowing just five points from Andree

Verhulst through three quarters. Koo Kim leads Mesa with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, while junior Chanel Anderson hits

5 of 9 from the field for 12 points and chips in with six rebounds. Corri

Lurmannn finishes with five blocked shots for the Mustangs. And, the

Tars’ Colleen Eadie scores 12 points, while Verhulst finishes with 14.

The Estancia girls basketball team defeats crosstown rival Costa Mesa,

40-36. The Eagles will their way to victory as Jessica Waltz scores nine

points, grabs five rebounds, snags five steals and dishes out four

assists. Estancia sophomore Amy Deming adds 12 points and grabs five

boards. Mesa’s Lurmann finishes with 11 points, while Katie Grogan scores

8.

Estancia’s boys soccer team posts a 2-0 shutout over host Laguna

Hills. The Eagles’ Willie Alfaro scores off a pass from Greg Austin. But,

the major blow comes with 15 minutes left as Ramon Garcia, who dribbles

coast to coast, rifles in a 30-yard shot to put the game away.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

On Jan. 10, three local high school teams lose close games, but

Estancia High claims victory in a nail-biter.

The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team comes up short, 69-68, in the

Mustangs’ Pacific Coast League opener against Trabuco Hills. Jeff Pickens

scores 23 points, while Mike DeGrazio chips in with 12.

Newport Harbor’s boys basketball team also loses a close one when

Woodbridge hits a shot with two seconds left for a 55-53 Sea View

League-opening win. Justin McIntee dominates inside for 19 points and 15 rebounds. Huy Nguyen suffers a sprained ankle, but scores 12 points and

adds six assists.

The Corona del Mar boys basketball team loses, 53-51, to Saddleback.

CdM’s Jon Upham scores 22 points, while Doug Hesse adds 12. The Sea Kings

miss 13 of 28 free throws.

The Estancia boys basketball team is the only squad to escape with a

victory on Jan. 10. The Eagles avoid the upset with a 70-67 win over

Laguna Beach. Estancia’s Matt Fuerbringer scores a game-high 25 points,

20 in the first half.

The CdM boys basketball team jumps back later in the week for a 62-50

victory over Woodbridge. Upham scores a game-high 19 points. Jason Clark

nets 5 of 6 from beyond the three-point arc in the first half.

Harbor’s boys basketball team also gets back in the win column with a

71-54 victory over University. The Sailors take out their frustrations as

McIntee scores 25 points and grabs 18 rebounds. Michael Stipe and Mark

McAnlis add 10 points each.
