Girls basketball: CdM snaps skid with 61-54 win over Canyon

GARDEN GROVE - After ending an eight-game losing streak Friday,

Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team still had wounds to lick

following the Sea Kings’ 61-54 pool-play victory over Canyon in the

Cavalier Classic at Santiago.

CdM (4-8) enjoyed a 53-38 lead in the fourth quarter, but Canyon

rallied behind a barrage of three-pointers to pull within five with

plenty of time left in the game (2:49).

“(Our losing streak) was almost nine,” quipped CdM Coach Elbert Davis,

whose squad suffered ankle injuries to Lauren Snell and Kristen McCoy (14

points).

Snell was taken to a hospital for precautionary measures by her

father, Davis said.

Sophomore guard Jackie McCoy led CdM with 16 points. The Sea Kings

built a 43-32 lead after three quarters, then increased their advantage

to 15 early in the fourth.

But Canyon’s Stephanie Anderson (12 points) and Marcella Serrano

combined for three three-pointers as CdM’s lead was sliced 54-49 and

57-52, the latter with 1:10 to play after Serrano’s three. Canyon would

get no closer.

CdM will play Sonora or El Modena today at 5 p.m. in a consolation

game.
