Girls soccer: CdM wins four in a row
SAN BERNARDINO - It seems as if the Corona del Mar High girls
soccer team is on a hot streak. But, with four straight wins in the San
Gorgonio Tournament and a 11-1-2 record Sea Kings Coach Ron Evans would
like to ignore the present time.
“I don’t want to jinx us going into (today),” he said as CdM will face
Etiwanda, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, in the semifinals at 10:45 a.m.
Etiwanda has won the tourney the past two years.
Yet, Evans can’t ignore the Sea Kings recent play. CdM began the round
of 16 with two victories Thursday, a 2-1 win over Don Lugo and a 2-0
decision over Norco.
“We do have a lot of character on this team,” Evans said. “Even though
we miss some players with injuries or sickness, the team seems to rise to
the occasion. We’ll definitely give Etiwanda a game.”
On Wednesday, CdM posted two shutouts with 4-0 victories over Granite
Hills and Apple Valley, respectively.
At the tournament played at the CYSA Complex in San Bernardino, the
Sea Kings have outscored their opponents, 12-1, with three shutouts.
Allison Harvey has scored five goals, while Jenny Long has three. And,
Jaycee Mahler and Kristin Hanson have scored two each.
CdM goalkeeper Britta Vogele turned back five shots against Don Lugo
and four against Norco.
The Sea Kings will be without Molly O’Meara and Lauren Loe today. The
tournament was rescheduled and has gone longer than expected, thus
interfering with O’Meara’s planned schedule for a trip out of town. Loe
was injured against Don Lugo and is not expected back today.
