* Donald Keller, the founding editor of the Independent, died March 19
at 70.
* Tyler Pinnick, a Vista View Middle School sixth-grader whose
untimely death prompted his family and the community to promote drug
awareness and prevention, died March 19 at 12.
* Teruko Takeuchi, mother of three who took pride in raising her
children, died June 2 at 52.
* Chanan Remington, a junior lifeguard who was spending the summer in
Surf City with her grandparents, died June 27 at 14.
* Dick Yukio Nerio, a former co-owner of the closed Meadowlark
Airport, died in July at 64.
* Don Beichley, who had just completed his 16th year as District 62
administrator for Little League Baseball, died Oct. 25 at 73.

* Jack Haley, the city’s unofficial mayor, owner of Captain Jack’s
restaurant and winner of the first-ever U.S. Open surfing championship in
1959, died March 25 at 65.
