FULLERTON - There’s not so much suffering in the growing pains of
the Corona del Mar High boys basketball team, but the losses still hurt.
The Sea Kings at least gained experience as they lost to host
Fullerton, 59-42, in nonleague action Friday night.
“We have a lot of seniors,” said senior Eric Snell, who is the only
returning starter from last year’s team. “But we don’t have that much
experience. I’m not really frustrated about that because the guys have
been working hard to gel.”
CdM (2-7) withstood the athleticism of the Indians (9-2) during the
first five minutes and other moments of the game. After the opening five
minutes, the teams were tied at seven, but Fullerton outscored CdM,
23-10, over the next 11 minutes, including a 9-0 run in a three-minute
span of the second quarter.
CdM was down 30-17 at the half and Fullerton maintained its lead in
the second half with patient ball movement.
Snell led the Sea Kings with 13 points, including three
three-pointers, while Idean Shahangian and Zack Brewster scored eight
points each. Sophomore Kevin Mancillas came off the bench to score seven
points.
“Patience and encouraging,” CdM Coach Paul Orris said of the team’s
needs in order to improve. “We can’t get down on each other. We have to
keep believing in ourselves and find the little things that will make us
better. We’ll be all right.”
