Emilee Young of Huntington Beach was appointed to the Golden West

College Foundation Board of Directors ... Mike Miller, a 1998 honor’s

graduate of Huntington Beach High School, has spent the last year in

Soldotna, Alaska, where he has worked a variety of jobs, including a

salmon fisherman and a back-country trail guide. In August, he saved a

child’s life by performing CPR on her after she had fallen through frozen

ice on a lake. At a banquet held in his honor in Tacoma, Wash., he was

awarded the Kendal B. Hawkings Award for Extreme Bravery and Courage. He

has obtained his pilot’s license and plans on starting a small tourism

business in which he will take vacationers into the outskirts of Alaska’s

forests. He is enrolled in Prince William Sound Community College where

he is working toward his associate’s degree ... Ryan Fusco, 3, won third

place in the Kid’s Pedal Car Races, Arnold Alpert won Best Convertible

for his 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS, Zack Curtner won second place in the

snowball eating contest and Garrett Curtner won third place in the

snowball-eating contest in the Holiday Car Show and Pedal Car

Invitational this month at the Orange County Fairgrounds. All of the

winners were from Fountain Valley ... Adult equestrian Christyn Hendrick

of Huntington Beach won two Ariat National Adult Medals of Excellence --

one at the horse shows in the Sun Desert Circuit 1 Horse Show and one at

the Beach Cities Horse Show ... Army Pvt. Enrique V. Ramirez of

Huntington Beach graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky.

During the training, he received instruction in drill and ceremonies,

weapons, first aid, physical fitness and Army history and traditions ...

Golden West College fine arts instructor Brian Conley was appointed by

Gov. Gray Davis to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.

Conley, who was sworn in Nov. 10, will help oversee the community college

system, appoint the state chancellor and write state regulations. He

earned a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Sacramento and a master’s

degree from Cal State Fresno. He is enrolled in a doctoral program at

Pepperdine University.
