NEWPORT BEACH - The wound was cut open and the Newport Harbor High
girls soccer team continued to pour on the salt.
Estancia, young and slowly improving, did its best to protect its
figurative wound. But, the Sailors fired off shot after shot, playing as
if to nullify their emotions after a 2-2 tie with El Toro on Thursday.
And, in the 75th minute, Harbor’s Kristen Nahin, who finished Tory
Manchester’s corner kick, scored the final goal in a 11-0 domination over
visiting Estancia (1-4-2) Tuesday.
Harbor (5-1-1) allowed just one shot on goal and outshot the Eagles,
37-1 -- 18 shots in the first half and 19 in the second.
“El Toro was one of our toughest games, because everyone gave 100%,”
said Katie Younglove, who scored Harbor’s first two goals. “It was nice
to get our confidence back today. We’re playing Capistrano Valley in our
first game of the Excalibur Tournament (Dec. 27-29). It’s going to be a
tough game, but I know we can pull it off.”
Just three minutes into the match, Younglove headed in a cross from
Tricia Orth. Five minutes later, Younglove struck again on a breakaway.
After 17 minutes, the Sailors built a 4-0 lead. In a four-minute span,
Manchester scored off a pass from junior Katie Yeager and then Satya
Twena, who took a pass from Manchester, dribbled right and kicked the
ball to the right and into the net.
“”We had a lot of fun,” said Orth who scored the final goal of the
first half in the 31st minute. “We were relaxed. We came in here knowing
that we would have a good time.”
The scoring barrage did not stop there. The Tars went on to score four
goals in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Manchester began the rain of goals. Meredith Miller scored twice, once
on her own and the other on a corner kick from Taryn Flamson.
Harbor junior Lauren Birchfield would then set up Flamson for another
goal and a 9-0 lead.
The scoring got so out of hand, Sailors Coach Jason Sorrell asked his
players not to attack on scoring chances. And even then Harbor would
still score.
Tars senior Mary Eimers kicked a ball that deflected off an Estancia
player and into the net for a 10-0 lead in the 64th minute.
“Even coming over here on the bus in some ways we felt the game was
already over,” Estancia Coach Ray Smyth said. “That’s something we have
to get past. It’s a big step for us to play someone like Newport Harbor.
It’s early days for us.”
The Tars’ precise passing and goal-scoring did not entirely overshadow
the Eagles’ efforts.
Estancia junior Arlis Reynolds fought off Harbor’s scoring chances in
her attempt to clear out the ball. Estancia’s freshman goalkeeper, Asia
Ingram, turned back 11 shots and Kathleen Sheafer earned three saves.
“I’m not embarrassed in the slightest,” Smyth said. “I feel for our
team. It must be hard for them. But we’re not embarrassed. We’re going to
live to fight another day.”
Harbor sophomore star Amy Burlingham missed the game because she was
assessed a red card in the El Toro game.
