Boys water polo: Bowlus, March share Div. II Player of Year honors.
Barry Faulkner
Corona del Mar High boys water polo standouts Garrett Bowlus and
Michael March, who led the Sea Kings to their second straight CIF
Southern Section Division II championship, have been named Division II
Co-Players of the Year by section coaches.
Bowlus, a senior, and March, a junior, are joined by sophomore
teammate Artie Dorr on the first team, while CdM juniors Sherwin Kim
(second team) and Bobby Messenger (third team) have also been recognized.
Bowlus, a first-team All-CIF choice as a junior, is a 6-foot-6,
200-pound two-meter man, who led the Sea Kings with 88 goals. He also
contributed a team-leading 32 assists and 33 steals.
March, a 6-4, 225-pound two-meter defender, came up big in the 15-7
title-game victory over Pacific Coast League rival University on Nov. 22.
In addition to holding powerful Uni hole man Ted Peck, the PCL MVP, to
only one goal, March, who toiled the last two seasons on the frosh-soph
team, scored a game-high five goals to lead the Sea Kings (22-5) to their
11th section crown. March, like Bowlus a first-team All-PCL performer,
finished with 62 goals and a team-leading 41 assists, as well as 15
steals. His primary contribution, however, was on defense, where he
consistently drew the opposing team’s top scorer.
Dorr, a strong, burly presence at two-meters, scored 59 goals and
added 12 assists and 16 steals for the two-time PCL champions, coached by
U.S. men’s Olympic team head man John Vargas. He was also first-team
all-league.
Kim, who shared time in goal, posted a team-high 136 saves.
Messenger, who along with March, Dorr and Kim form a talented nucleus
of returners bent on a three-peat next fall, had 33 steals, 24 goals and
17 assists.
Kim and Messenger were second-team All-PCL honorees.
University’s Jon Pendleton is the Coach of the Year and five Trojan
players were recognized.
