Girls soccer: Mesa edged by Aliso Viejo
COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team gave visiting
Aliso Viejo all it could handle in Tuesday’s 1-0 nonleague loss.
“We played well against one of the top teams in Orange County,” Mesa
Coach Dan Johnston said. “Our schedule doesn’t get any easier after this
either.”
Midfielder Rollie Coakley scored in the 70th minute for the Wolverines
(3-0), ranked No. 2 in Orange County.
The Mustangs (2-1) nearly tied the score at the end of the game, but
Lisa Dunn’s shot was saved just in front of the goal as time expired.
Chelsea Soria had 12 saves in goal for Mesa. Johnston was also pleased
with the play of Katie Roche, Sarah Smallcomb and Devin Denman.
“I usually keep track of great plays with little stars in my notebook
and Katie must have had a half-dozen,” Johnston said. “Sarah and Devin
did a great job of shutting down Aliso’s forwards the entire game.”
