AYSO Region 97: Amoeba win division championship
NEWPORT BEACH - The Amoeba, a boys under 14 soccer team from AYSO
Region 97 took all three games of its double-elimination tournament to
win the division championship.
In the opener, the Amoeba easily took care of the Galaxy, 8-0, on
Saturday. Brandon Sowers, Nico Hendricks and Josh Acosta each scored 2
goals, while Tony Riva Jr. and Clayton Heiser each added single goals.
Against the White Diablos in the second game, the Amoeba jumped out to
a 2-0 lead on goals by Philip Houten and Brian Frey, only to see the
Diablos tie it in the second half.
The Amoeba responded with goals by Jon Mena and Sean Rowe to give the
squad a 4-2 win, setting up a rematch with the Galaxy.
In the finals, Hendricks and Ruben Ordaz each scored to help the
Amoeba jump out to a 2-0 lead.
The Galaxy cut the lead in half before Rowe gave the Amoeba an
insurance goal to seal the win.
The defense was led by Acosta, Houten, Ordaz, Clayton Heiser, Chase
Nelson.
