Schauer shatters record
Huntington Beach’s Scott Schauer broke an 11-year-old Southern
California swimming record last weekend at the 32nd annual Turkey Classic
meet in Mission Viejo.
Swimming to a record time of 1:50.20 in the 200-yard freestyle,
Schauer broke the previous event record time of 1:50.43, set in 1989 in
the boys’ 11- and 12-year-old division.
Right behind Schauer in the event was Tristan Friend, who placed
second with a National Reportable Time of 1:55.27.
Schauer won six of his seven events with NRTs in the 100-meter
freestyle (51.28), 500-meter freestyle (5:03.60), 100-meter butterfly
(57.26), 200-meter butterfly (2:06.59), 200-meter individual medley relay
(2:06.49) and 100-meter individual medley (58.70).
Schauer’s sister, Alexis, also had an outstanding meet, winning seven
of her eight events, with one NRT in the 100-meter butterfly (1:06.40) in
the girls’ 9- and 10-year-old division.
Schauer and Friend also joined forces with local athletes Rory Bevins
and Derrick Willits on the Socal 14-and-under division water polo team,
which captured the silver medal earlier this month at the Speedo Cup
tournament in St. Louis.
Bevins was named most valuable player at Sunday’s team banquet.
