Women’s volleyball: Pirates sweep past Fullerton

COSTA MESA - Lauren Wilson and Natasha Evylnn each had 15 kills to
lead the Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team to a 15-9, 15-9,
15-13 win over visiting Fullerton Wednesday night.
With the win, the Pirates improve to 16-6, 10-3 in the Orange Empire
Conference. OCC has won seven of its past eight matches.
Wilson now has 369 kills, just 35 shy of the single-season record of
404 set by Beth Waterman (Newport Harbor High) in 1999. She has led the
Pirates in kills in 18 of 21 matches this season.
Coast jumped out to big leads in Games 1 and 2 to take control early.
In Game 3, OCC trailed, 11-5, but went on a 10-2 run to close out the
match.
Setter Tina Nguyen had 38 assists and eight kills as OCC swept the
season series with the Hornets. The Pirates won, 15-5, 15-2, 15-12, on
Oct. 20 at Fullerton.
Kellie Culver had 11 kills, while Aprille Brown added 10 for the
Hornets (6-11, 4-9). Tawnya Giampaya paced the Hornets’ attack with 37
assists.
OCC will wrap up OEC play at home against Riverside Friday night at 7.
