MAILBAG - Nov. 16, 2000

Congratulations to Larry Crandall and Chuck Conlosh on their

reelection to the Fountain Valley City Council. I want to thank the

editors of the Independent for their endorsement and thank all my friends

and voters who supported my campaign.

Resident proud to be an American

On election day, I was an inspector at a voting precinct, and I was

proud of my neighbors and their dedication to the democratic process.

I was at the poll at 5:30 a.m., and we opened at 7 a.m. There was a

steady stream of voters until we closed at 8 p.m. The voters inside

continued voting for another 20 minutes. We had blind people who were

assisted by members of their family, elderly assisted by their friends,

and a young lady suffering from multiple sclerosis who had to vote out in

her car. She was assisted by one of our clerks and her husband.

Bravery is not limited to the men and women in uniform. Most of all, I

was proud of all the wonderful people for their patience and good humor.

Most were gracious and thanked us for being there.

After 10 p.m., I went home and watched the results on television. It

wasn’t until 8 a.m. Wednesday that I found that Debbie Cook and Connie

Boardman had won seats on the Huntington Beach City Council. I was

elated. I was not unhappy that Pam Julien was reelected. I feel that she

has been separated from the triad of Bill Borden-Gil Coerper-Julien by

the will of an informed electorate. I think that we are saying that

Julien should be her own person and stop voting the way developers and

Dave Garofalo dictate.

The best part of the election of Cook and Boardman is that they proved

that the Koll Co. could not buy an election with a mudslinging campaign.

I think that it backfired on them. It’s funny that the Beatles song

“Can’t Buy Me Love” comes to mind.

I am so proud to be an American.
