The National Charity League Pacific Coast Chapter will hold a rummage

sale from 8 a.m .to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ocean View High School’s

Marina High School band to hold fund-raiser

The Marina High School Marching Band will hold its second annual

rummage sale in Huntington Beach from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday

The rummage sale, which will be accompanied by a carwash and pancake

breakfast, is sponsored by the band’s booster club, with all proceeds

going toward new equipment, uniforms and covering some of the costs of

instruments.

The pancake breakfast and carwash will run from 8 to 11 a.m.

City, chamber to host economic conference

Surf City officials are teaming with the Huntington Beach Chamber of

Commerce on Tuesday for the 14th annual Economic Conference at the Hilton

Waterfront Beach Resort.

The program, which will begin at 8 a.m., will feature speakers Nelson

Chan of the California and Trade Commerce Agency and Mike Ruane, who will

discuss ongoing projects and events in the community.

City and county officials also will host a Regional Investment Capitol

Forum that day that is designed to stimulate, reinforce and celebrate

business activity in West Orange County cities, including Huntington

Beach, Fountain Valley, Seal Beach, Westminster, Stanton, Los Alamitos,

La Palma, Garden Grove, Buena Park and Cypress.

Fire Department honored for efforts

The Residential Fire Safety Institute, a public interest group

committed to reducing fire deaths and injuries, awarded the Huntington

Beach Fire Department a Life Safety Achievement Award for 1999.

The award marks the fifth consecutive year the department has been

commended by institute officials for its fire prevention and suppression

activities, which have helped save lives in home fires.

The department qualified for the award because it recorded no deaths

in structure fires last year, institute officials said.

While only 20% of all fires occur in the home, they result in 80% of

all fire deaths.

Through public education, fire prevention activities and quick

emergency responses, the department was able to join the ranks of 1,243

firefighting agencies in the U.S, Canada, Iceland and Puerto Rico to

receive the award last year.

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR ADULT DAY CARE

Friends of Alzheimer Caregivers and the John Douglas French Center for

Alzheimer’s Disease created a scholarship program to help local families

underwrite the cost of adult day care. The scholarships are intended to

be used at The Club, 3951 Katella Ave., Los Alamitos.

Scholarships will be granted for a 12-month period and may be used

from one to three days a week. Over the course of a year, that could mean

a savings of as much as $5,000.

To qualify for a scholarship, the participant must be at least 60,

have a dementia illness that causes memory loss or confusion and live in

either Huntington Beach, Anaheim, Cypress, Garden Grove, Hawaiian

Gardens, Lakewood, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, Seal Beach Signal Hill,

Stanton or Westminster. The participant’s total household income also

cannot exceed $4,000 per month, and he or she cannot be receiving

financial assistance for respite care from the government or any other

source.

sh GOLDEN WEST TO HOLD TWO HOLIDAY SHOWS

Golden West College will present two holiday programs this season.

The Ballet Repertory Theatre will presents the traditional,

full-length version of “The Nutcracker” from Dec. 1-24 for 12

performances.

Tickets are $12.50 general and $10.50 for children younger than 12.

Reservations are recommended.

Renowned musician and conductor Tom Hernandez and the Golden West

College International Symphonic Band will present an evening of falling

snowflakes, sleigh bells and colored lights in the “Many Moods of

Christmas.”

The annual musical event is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 7-9 and 8 p.m.

Dec. 10.

WATERFRONT HILTON EARNS AAA AWARD

The Waterfront Hilton in Huntington Beach has received the American

Automobile Assn.’s Four Diamond award.

The presentation was made at an awards ceremony Oct. 24 at the Surf &

Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach, where members of 56 Southern California

hotels and 29 restaurants were honored.

The resort has recently completed renovations valued at more than $4.5

million and will continue to refurbish its decor through the coming year.

SURF CITY POLICE RECEIVE HONORS

The Huntington Beach Police Department and several individual officers

were recognized for their efforts under the Grant Assistance for Law

Enforcement Program sponsored by the state Department of Alcoholic

Beverage Control.

Sgt. Mike Reynolds, Det. Doug Talman and Officers Kreg Muller and

Kelly Rodriguez were honored for their achievement and accomplishments,

and for meeting and exceeding their goals for the 1999-00 year grant

cycle.

Statewide, the Huntington Beach Police Department was third in the

number of referrals made to the department, after San Francisco and Los

Angeles police departments.
