Ocean View High earned itself a berth in the CIF Southern Section
Division VI playoffs by winning its regular season finale Friday, and the
Seahawks have been rewarded a first-round date Friday with Seaview League
champion Irvine.
Also on opening night of the Division I playoffs, Sunset League
runner-up Edison (8-2) will host Servite (7-3) at Huntington Beach High
in the second meeting between the two teams this season, while Fountain
Valley High (5-5), which received an at-large berth, will travel to
Veterans Stadium to challenge defending Division I co-champion Long Beach
Poly (10-0).
The task awaiting Ocean View (6-4), an at-large selection, won’t be
easy. Irvine cruised to the Seaview League title and capped a 10-0
regular season Friday with a 48-13 thrashing of Woodbridge, the Seaview’s
third playoff entry.
The Vaqueros have the size and talent to make another strong bid for a
title in a highly competitive division. Just last year, Irvine was edged
by Seaview League rival Newport Harbor in the division’s championship
game, 19-18.
“Obviously, they are a very, very good football team,” Ocean View
Coach Harold Eggers said. “We definitely have our work cut out for us.”
Ocean View will be making consecutive playoff appearances for the
first time in school history. Last year, the Seahawks were upended by
Kennedy, 35-15, in first-round play.
“We just feel good about making the playoffs,” Eggers said. “I’m just
happy that the kids get another chance to play.”
As for second chances, Servite of the Serra League, recipient of a
wild card berth, will get another crack at Edison. Back on Oct. 7 at Cal
State Fullerton, the Chargers edged the Friars in a wild one, 35-33.
Like Ocean View and Servite, Fountain Valley High got into the
playoffs via an at-large bid and, for the second consecutive season, the
Barons take on Long Beach Poly in the opening round. And, like Ocean
View, the Barons face the daunting task of facing an unbeaten Jackrabbits
team that is considered a favorite, once again, for the Division I crown.
