Calling ‘em

FRIDAY’S CIF GAMES

Fountain Valley vs. Long Beach Poly . . . Poly by 13

(at Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View vs. Irvine . . . Irvine by 12

(at Irvine High, 7:30 p.m.)

Servite vs. Edison . . . Edison by 4

(at Huntington Beach High, 7:30 p.m.)

And here’s why . . . Familiar playoff foes Fountain Valley (5-5) and

Long Beach Poly (10-0) will meet again for the second time in a year,

and, just like last November, Poly is favored to advance. The Jackrabbits

have the talent and speed to keep the Barons guessing all night, but a

good showing by the Fountain Valley defense could make this one closer

than many may expect. It happened 12 months ago. Last year’s score: Long

Beach Poly 28, Fountain Valley 20 . . .

It will take their best performance of the year, and then some, for

Ocean View (6-4) to beat favored Irvine (10-0). The Seahawks have shown

prowess on offense and their defense has had its moments this season, but

the firepower of the Vaqueros could be overwhelming . . .

Five weeks ago, Servite (7-3) dropped a thrilling nonleague game to

Edison (8-2), and another close game seems likely when the Friars (7-3)

and Chargers (8-2) tangle again. Can Edison bounce back from a

heartbreaking loss to Esperanza? The Chargers have an offense that’s

capable of lighting up the scoreboard, and they’ll be facing a Friar

defense that has given up 10 points or more in nine games. Last meeting

in October: Edison 35, Servite 33.
