Postseason Notes

While most first-round playoff games will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday,

the Fountain Valley High-Long Beach Poly game will kickoff at 7 p.m. at

Veterans Stadium. Poly school officials had asked the CIF Southern

Section office for the time change, which was granted . . .

The Servite-Edison and Ocean View-Irvine tilts will still start at

7:30 p.m. . . .

Fountain Valley High will make its sixth straight postseason

appearance . . .

The Barons will face Long Beach Poly in the opening round for the

third time in four years. They are 1-2 in previous playoff meetings,

having beaten Poly, 30-18, in a first-round game in 1975. The Jackrabbits

won 28-20 last year, and 40-9 in 1997 . . .

Fountain Valley High, which owns two CIF championships (1978, ‘88), is

24-17 all-time in postseason play . . .

Edison returns to the playoff picture for the first time in five

years. Their last appearance? A 1995 first-round loss to Long Beach Poly

. . .

The Chargers have won three CIF titles (1979-80, ‘85), and are 18-16-1

overall in the postseason . . .

Servite and Edison have met four times in past playoff games, with the

Chargers holding a 3-1 series edge . . .

Ocean View will visit the playoffs for just the third time in school

history. The Seahawks have yet to win in the postseason . . .

A win over Irvine on Friday would give Ocean View seven wins on the

season, tying the school record for most wins in a season, a mark owned

by the 1989 Seahawks . . .

Seahawks Phillip Smith, Erick Falessi, Alex Balderas, Jason Rhoads,

Ryan Cook and Jason Ketcham have played together since their freshman

year, and they have the distinction of being part of the first senior

class that has lead the school to back-to-back playoff appearances . . .

Final note: Long Beach Poly is ranked third in the nation in USA
