Friday’s Golden West League finale between Saddleback and Ocean View

at Huntington Beach High has major league implications. Currently, Tustin

leads the league at 3-0 with Saddleback and Westminster each a game

behind the Tillers at 2-1. Next comes Ocean View at 1-2. The Seahawks can

move back into playoff contention with a victory over the Roadrunners. To

complicate matters, Westminster figures to suffer its second league loss

when the Lions visit heavily favored Tustin tonight. A win would give the

Tillers yet another GWL crown. Should Ocean View, Saddleback and

Westminster each finish 2-2, a coin flip will determine the league’s

second- and third-place playoff representatives ...

Edison defensive back/receiver/kicker A.J. Martinez put his name in

the school’s record book when he made his eighth interception of the

season in last Friday’s win over rival Fountain Valley, tying the

school’s single-season mark. Martinez is now the county leader in that

department ...

Esperanza running back Temitope Sonuyi, the front-runner for county

player of the year honors, needs just 124 yards to break the 2,000-yard

rushing mark for the season. In addition, the 5-foot-10, 210-pound senior

needs just 80 yards to break Esperanza’s single-season rushing record of

1,955 yards, set in 1986 by Mike Miscione ...

It’s a big week for the Esperanza-Edison football rivalry. Not only

will the varsity squads play tonight for the Sunset championship, but the

Chargers’ freshman team (3-1 in league) get things started today when it

travels to Esperanza to battle the Aztec frosh (4-0) for the league

title. At 3 p.m. Friday, Edison’s junior varsity (3-1) will host

Esperanza (4-0) in another championship showdown.
