NEWPORT BEACH - Now in its second year, the Toshiba Senior Classic
Scholarship Fund is expanding to benefit the local high schools.
The scholarships, which include a $2,500 grant and Toshiba computer,
will be presented to one senior from each of the four high schools in the
Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
In 2000, the scholarship’s inaugural year, it benefited five schools
in the Irvine Unified School District. Both districts will have
recipients in 2001.
The program is a joint effort by the tournament title sponsor and
operator, Hoag Hospital.
Applications for the Toshiba Senior Classic Scholarship Fund are now
available in the counseling departments of the designated high schools --
Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, Estancia and Costa Mesa.
To be considered, applicants must be a high school senior, rank in the
upper half of their graduating class, receive two recommendations from
school representatives, and demonstrate leadership and/or involvement in
extracurricular activities or community service.
Each school has been asked to nominate at least two candidates by Jan.
27, 2001. Scholarship winners will be announced Feb. 27 at the Toshiba
Senior Classic Community Breakfast.
The seventh annual $1.4 million Senior PGA Tour event, hosted by
Newport Beach Country Club, is Feb. 26 through March 4. Details: (949)
