THE RACE FOR HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY COUNCIL
Tariq Malik
Although this is his first time running, Mark Szulc has garnered some
experience in politics over the years.
He has volunteered on many Republican campaigns and served as the
former national executive director of the Young Republicans for two
years, and he is concerned that not enough people vote during elections.
Szulc said campaigning districts, localizing candidates to their own
neighborhoods, would benefit the community because it would bring
improved representation to the council dais.
“With districts, you are going to know your issues with your side of
town,” he said, adding that the method would make for more fair and equal
representation of residents.

MARK SZULC ON:
* REDEVELOPMENT
Szulc supports redevelopment as long as it fits into the city’s
persona.
“It’s important not to ruin the Downtown area, which is ingrained with
the Huntington Beach-Surf City atmosphere,” he said.
While he supports affordable housing, Szulc believes building large
complexes with many units isn’t the answer. Instead, the city should
start with small apartment complexes and build more of them to
accommodate the population, he said.
* BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING THE CITY
The repair and replacement of the city’s infrastructure systems will
be a top priority over the next few years, Szulc said.
There should be a focus, he said, on fixing and repairing the aging
sewer system, as well as city streets, storm drains and services used on
an everyday basis by residents.
