Closing In

With a victory Friday over Fountain Valley High, Edison can earn a

share of the Sunset League championship. It would be the first for the

school in 10 years . . .

The Chargers have not started league play with a 3-0 record since 1993

. . .

Edison’s defense has yielded just 27 points in the Chargers’ first

three league games, but the bigger news is that the stop unit has not

been scored upon in the second half in each of those three games . . .

Fountain Valley has had little to no luck in the injury department.

Case in point: Running back/strong safety Mike Kotler injured his knee

Friday against Los Alamitos, and he is scheduled for an MRI. However, the

Barons will get back Joey Flores and Chad Triplett, both missing from

action for the past few weeks, for Friday’s game with Edison. Eric Young,

also sidelined by injury, is still questionable . . .

Perhaps, though, Marina has suffered the most crushing of injuries,

losing starting quarterback Beau Brown to a collarbone injury two weeks

ago (his status still is uncertain), and starters Aaron Williams and Sam

Prince to broken legs, both of which were suffered in last week’s loss to

Edison . . .

Williams was scheduled for surgery on his right leg on Wednesday,

Marina Coach Mike Dodd said . . .

Edison’s A.J. Martinez needs just one more interception to tie Matt

Hombs’ single-season record of eight set in 1982 . . .

With seven picks heading into Friday’s Fountain Valley game, Martinez

is just five shy of tying the school career record of 12, set also by

Hombs (1981-82). Martinez, at nine and counting, still has his senior

year to play in 2001 . . .

He and Los Alamitos’s receiver/defensive back Steve Shinen are tied

for the county lead in interceptions through eight weeks . . .

Santa Ana, Ocean View’s opponent Friday, is winless in eight games.

The Saints’ porous defense has yielded an average of 40 points per game .

. .

Polling place: The current CIF Southern Section Division I has Edison

fifth. Sunset League rivals Esperanza and Los Alamitos are sixth and

seventh, respectively . . .

The latest county poll has Edison second, followed by Esperanza and

Los Alamitos. The Aztecs and Griffins will renew their heated rivalry

Friday at Valencia High . . .

Boy, things are just beginning to heat up in the Sunset League.
