THE RACE FOR HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY COUNCIL

Tariq Malik

Bill Borden has served on the Huntington Beach Community Services

Commission, been a member of the Speakers Bureau and advised City Council

candidates in past elections. A newspaper columnist and businessman, he

has been a resident in the city for 18 years and has volunteered at the

Huntington Beach Community Clinic, chaired the Beachwalk Homeowners Assn.

and served on the Police Department’s Anti-Crime Coalition.

The most important issue, though, in Huntington Beach is public

safety, he said.

“Every man, woman and child has a right to feel safe at home,” he

added. “This is the No. 1 issue in any city government.”

* REDEVELOPMENT

Above all else, the city must be more business-friendly, Borden said.

“Presently, our guidelines for Downtown are too cumbersome and

heavy-handed,” he said. “In cooperation, we should revise the Downtown

master plan and get on with it.”

Borden also supports revamping the Huntington Center, but only if it

includes responsible deals with Wards and Burlington Coat Factory, which

he said have been faithful to the mall.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING THE CITY:

“It is imperative that we resolve the problem of bacterial

contamination of our ocean. Urban runoff must be diverted to the Orange

County Sanitation District, the countywide raw sewage lines must be

repaired, and the sanitation district should move ahead with its Ground

Water Replenishment Plan.”

The cost should be shared by the state, the county and the sanitation

district and other county cities, not just Huntington Beach, he said.
