OCEAN VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT ENDORSEMENT
The Ocean View School District has many challenges to meet in the
immediate future -- incorporating class-size reductions in kindergarten
through third grades, dealing with the ever-changing district population
and building the gymnasium-auditoriums at the four middle schools.
And we believe there are no two people better able to meet these
obstacles than incumbent Peg Edey and longtime resident Andrea Graboff.
Edey, who has been on the board since 1996 and is the only incumbent
running because Linda Kovach opted not to seek reelection, has impressed
us with her knowledge of school issues. She wants to continue her focus
on ensuring Ocean View students receive the best possible education.
She has the experience to get the job done, including serving as
president of the elementary and middle school parent-teacher-student
associations and PTAs, and acting as a legislative representative for the
PTA. She has also served on such district organizations as the budget
advisory and instructional committees.
But she said it’s her life experience that makes her stand out from
other candidates. As a teacher, she understands what it takes to educate
students. She is 100% committed to the students and said she plans to
work hard to bring out the good things about the Ocean View School
District.
Edey favors building gymnasiums at Marine View, Mesa View, Spring View
and Vista View middle schools, but admits the district needs to work with
the community to come to a compromise on their funding and usage.
Graboff, who unsuccessfully ran for the Huntington Beach Union High
School District two years ago, has a child at Marina High School and
another, a student with a learning disability, attends a private school
in Tustin.
But Edey’s dedication to the Ocean View School District is strong. As
a longtime district resident, Graboff said she is not a single-issue
candidate and recognizes there needs to be balance in the district for it
to be successful in educating students.
Besides PTA boards and committees, Graboff has also served on school
site councils at the elementary, middle and high school levels, the
Huntington Beach Union High School District Open Enrollment Task Force
and the Textbook Adoption Committee. She also spent time as a classroom
volunteer.
She said she wants to work with the community to build the much-needed
gymnasiums at each of the middle schools.
The other candidates seeking a seat on the district’s school board --
Barbara Boskovich, Pam Ogdon and Jim Peters -- all possess similar
qualities that would make them good board members, but we believe Edey
and Graboff are the best candidates.
