Speedway bikes keep rolling into 2001
-- Tony Altobelli
The Orange County Fair and Exposition Center Board of Directors has
approved a one-year contract for International Speedway, Inc. to continue
its Speedway Motorcycle racing program in 2001, it was announced Friday
evening.
The 2001 season will mark the 33rd year of racing action at the Orange
County Fairgrounds and will consist of approximately 20 events staged
between April and October.
Despite the Costa Mesa Speedway having a long and lasting relationship
with fans and racers, the endeavor appeared to be on its way out after
this season’s conclusion in late October.
Negotiations to renew Speedway Inc.’s lease at the Fairgrounds stalled
and the end of racing at Costa Mesa Speedway appeared eminent. Until
Friday.
According to promoter Brad Oxley, International Speedway, Inc. plans
to “redouble” its efforts to make the 2001 season a success.
