Here’s a listing of special events to entertain you through the
weekend and beyond.
SATURDAY
It’ll be a Celtic-themed “Star Search” with only one category --
dance. The Mini Celtic Couples Dance Competition will be held at 2 p.m.
in the courtyard of Muldoon’s Irish Pub, 202 Newport Center Drive,
Fashion Island, Newport Beach. Children age 10 and younger from the

SUNDAY
It may be fall, but you can feel “Younger Than Springtime.” A Cup of
Water will perform a one-hour version of the Broadway classic “South
Pacific” at 2:30 p.m. at Borders Books, Music & Cafe, South Coast Plaza,
3333 Bear St., Costa Mesa. Songs will include “Some Enchanted Evening,”
“Nothin’ Like a Dame” and “Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair.” Free.

MONDAY
Ever wonder what nonliterary magical realism involves? For visual
answers, visit the Newport Beach Public Library’s exhibit of original
mono prints by Marilyn Ellis titled “Magic Realism,” which opens today.
The artwork, accompanied by original poems by John C. Harrell, will be
exhibited through Nov. 1 at 1000 Avocado Ave. (949) 717-3801.
TUESDAY
Think of today as a field day for the arts. Writers, musicians and
artists will celebrate the fourth issue of “Notes from the Sliding
Pillar” from 7 to 10 p.m. today at The Sol Grill, 110 McFadden Place,
Newport Beach. The event, called Rhythm & Rhyme, is presented by Sliding

WEDNESDAY
Expect nothing short of musical dexterity as French pianist
Jean-Philippe Collard debuts with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, playing
Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, at 8 p.m. The performance starts off
music director Carl St. Clair’s 11th season. Collard also will perform at
8 p.m. Thursday at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town
