Men’s water polo: U.S. advances to medal round
SYDNEY, Australia - The United States Olympic men’s water polo team
advanced to the medal round with a 9-3 win over Greece Wednesday night in
Sydney.
Corona del Mar High grad and U.S. team captain Chris Oeding scored two
goals in the win.
The U.S., coached by current CdM Coach John Vargas, will take on
Russia in the quarterfinals.
Eighteen-year-old Tony Azevedo led the Americans with three goals,
while Wolf Wigo chipped in with two.
Goalie Dan Hackett was strong, holding the Greeks scoreless for three
quarters, but will have a much tougher opponent in Russia, which routed
Slovakia, 21-5, to reach the medal round.
After struggling in 6-on-5 situations through the first two games, the
U.S. was 4 for 8 with the man advantage against Greece.
