The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team looks to stay hot
when it travels to Mater Dei to take on the Monarchs tonight at 6:15.
It was Mater Dei which gave the Sailors one of their two losses last
year in a nonleague matchup, 15-13, 7-15, 15-13, 15-7, at Newport.
Newport got the ultimate revenge on the Monarchs, winning, 15-7,
16-14, 15-6, in the CIF Division I state semifinals on the way to its
second straight state title.
Following a tough, four-game loss at Laguna Beach, the Sailors have
won five of their last six matches, including Thursday’s 15-7, 10-15,
15-7, 15-5 win over rival Corona del Mar.
Senior outside hitter Taylor Govaars led the Sailors with 19 kills and
10 digs, while senior middle blocker Liz Lord had 13 kills and three
blocks.
The availability of junior Christine Woller, who missed the CdM match
with an ankle sprain, is still uncertain.
