A 76-year-old Costa Mesa man was struck and killed by a car while
crossing Newport Boulevard on his bicycle, police said.
Douglas Boniface was riding east on Industrial Way across Newport
Boulevard at 6:18 a.m. Saturday when he was struck by a 2000 Nissan
Maxima driven by Jason Barlow Tillery, 29, of Newport Beach, said Sgt.
Tim Schennum of the Costa Mesa Police Department.
Investigating officers said the car was estimated to be traveling
between 60 and 70 mph when Boniface was hit.
Tillery was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the
influence and vehicular manslaughter.
He is being held at the Costa Mesa jail on $250,000 bail. Arraignment
is scheduled Tuesday at Harbor Justice Center.
Boniface’s family declined to comment. Funeral arrangements are
pending.
