JIM DE BOOM -- Community & Clubs

PEACE JAM TODAY: The seventh annual celebration of the United Nations’

International Day of Peace will be held today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at

Triangle Square in Costa Mesa. The Bahais of Costa Mesa and the Orange

Coast Unitarian Universalist Church have planned a free afternoon that

will entertain people of all ages.

Live entertainment includes The Aftermath, featuring Hurricane Julie,

Brian Taraz performing original Scripture rock and the Orange Coast

Unitarian Universalist Choir. Throughout the day, presentations will be

made by Costa Mesa council members Libby Cohen and Heather Somers, as

well as the NAACP, Amnesty International, the United Nations Assn., the

Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council and Bahais of Costa Mesa.

Come on out and let’s celebrate the Day of Peace and pray it continues

until tomorrow. For more information, call (949) 646-4652 or click on

www.oc-bahai.org.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP: Past District Governor Mike Scheafer presented a

life membership from Lions International to Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor

Lions Club member Tom Rea, who first joined the Lions in 1946, nearly 55

years ago. Tom’s wife, Dorothy, was present at the ceremony as members of

the visiting Costa Mesa-Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club joined with the

host club in a standing ovation. Congratulations to Tom on 55 years of

service to his community and the world!

TOUGH TUESDAY FOR KIDS: Headlines in Tuesday’s Daily Pilot read

“Preschool, site of tragedy closes;” “Shalimar Learning Center shuts

down;” “Orphan outreach;” and “Promise of day-care meeting offers little

comfort.” It was a depressing front page. All four articles dealt with

children and theiractivities, or lack of future activities. As I read the

articles, none of the problems cited were caused by children but by

adults.

Unfortunately, the litigation on the Southcoast Early Childhood

Learning Center will go on for years. The leadership at Shalimar Learning

Center needs to reopen their doors and do what is best for children, just

as it has been. The Shalimar Learning Center is more than one person!

The leadership at the Orange County Department of Education, the YMCA

or the Newport-Mesa Unified School District needs to step forward to help

find additional day-care opportunities for those hundreds of families who

will lose day care in December.

We need to salute Evelyn Komuntale for her work in Uganda with AIDS

Orphaned African Children Project.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SERVICE CLUBS: Hans D. Linhardt, who is

sponsored by Dick Cooling, joined the Rotary Club of Newport Beach

Sunrise.

WORTH REPEATING: From the Newport Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis

Club’s Scuttlebutt:

“The purpose of education is to replace a closed mind with an open

one.”
