And here’s why...

The line play of the Huntington Beach High Oilers will determine their

fate against Capistrano Valley. If the Oilers’ rushing game can consume

the clock and wear down the Cougars in the trenches, then victory is at

hand. The Courgars balance, though, wins out here. Team’s didn’t meet

last year...

By now, Ocean View High quarterback Patrick Campbell should have a

handle on running the offense, now that the former all-league wide

receiver is in his third game. Campbell could have a big passing night at

the expense of a Century defensive unit that isn’t deep. In addition, the

Centurions have new faces at the skill positions. The Seahawks have

enough firepower here to notch another nonleague win. Last year’s score:

Ocean View 37, Century 14...

A great matchup looms in La Mirada for Fountain Valley High, in a game

that should go down to the wire. While both teams feature strong running

games, this one could be decided at the pass. The Barons must find a way

to contain talented Matadores running back Chris Rudiger if they hope to

win. That, and they must overcome La Mirada’s home field advantage. Last

year’s score: Fountain Valley 16, La Mirada 7...

The Dana Hills game presents a challenge to Edison High: it comes one

week before Mater Dei. Dana Hills is talented and playing at home, but

the Chargers’ balanced attack will prove too much for the Dolphins. Bring

on the Monarchs. Teams didn’t meet last year...

Marina High has its second tough road assignment in as many weeks when

it takes on Mayfair High. The main task for the Vikings: find a way to

contain Allen Kennett, one of the top running backs in the Southland. If

they can do that, then they’ll have a great shot at a victory. Otherwise,

it could be a long night. Teams didn’t meet last year.
