* AT ISSUE: Huntington Beach officials are determining whether to ban
nudity in public places.
It’s ridiculous to even consider banning nudity (“City checking
legality of public nudity law,” Sept. 14). Normal people don’t mind
seeing the human body the way God made it, and the ones who do object
should be sent back where they came from.

I have lived in Huntington Beach for 28 years. That [public nudity] is
preposterous. They should ban it. Why would anyone want to expose
themselves?

I am a resident of Huntington Beach and have been for 38 years. I am
really appalled that they want to put this nude bar in our beautiful,
wonderful city. I and many of my friends are totally against it -- nudity
on the beaches and in these juice bars. We don’t want our city ruined. I
just feel so badly about it.

So, the same City Council that gave us the expensive, and mostly
worthless, “new” Downtown would now like to divert our attention by
raising the imagined problem of public nudity -- a nonissue. How
convenient that they found this issue at election time instead of the
real issue of a crumbling infrastructure in the city. I doubt if the
public nudity issue will dissuade the public from throwing the rascals
out this November.
ROY NESSON
Huntington BeachI would like to protest this nude bar in Huntington
Beach.

I am very much against this nude bar. I’d appreciate it if you forbid
it and get rid of it.

It’s a good idea [to ban nudity]. Huntington Beach, where I’ve lived
in the area for 28 years, has enough sex going on, and it’s hard not to
be tired of the “freedom of expression” argument. We’re restricting that.
How long before rape is a freedom of expression, and murder is a freedom
of expression. Freedom doesn’t mean freedom to do anything you want to,
freedom means freedom to do what you ought to do.
JIM GAME

I have been a naturist for about 50 years, and I am definitely against
the banning of nudity, especially on public beaches.
GERDA HAYES

Why should we pass a law to ban something that doesn’t exist? I am
against all frivolous legislation such as this. The real issue is
sex-oriented businesses, which have nothing to do with public nudity. I
wonder if this proposed ordinance would outlaw showering at health clubs
in the city?
I am a nudist and take offense at the wording in the ordinance that
links all public nudity with that in nude adult entertainment businesses.
Regulate the business in question, not the entire population of the
city.SUZANNE SCHELL
