Orange Coast falls
Orange Coast College’s men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of
the season Tuesday, dropping a 3-1 nonconference decision to visiting
L.A. Harbor.
Coast (4-1-3) jumped to a 1-0 lead behind Dan Espinoza’s goal in the
ninth minute off a pass from Geno Vitale-Sansosti, but that was the end
of the OCC fireworks.
“We dominated the first half, but we just couldn’t finish off any of
our scoring chances,” said OCC assistant coach Pat Callaghan. “They did a
better job of that, which made the difference in the game.”
Harbor got on the board just before the break, evening the score at
1-1 on a Vincente Juarez goal in the 45th minute. The Seahawks (3-2-2)
took the lead for good on a goal by Salvador Diaz 10 minutes into the
second half, and Josh Smith closed it out with a goal in the 85th minute.
Coast outshot Harbor, 16-12. Pirate keeper Hilario Arriaga finished
with seven saves, as did Harbor goalie Greg Miller. Carlos Pacheco, who
entered the game when Miller left with an injury, had four saves.
Coast opens Orange Empire Conference play at home against Fullerton
Friday at 3 p.m.
