Girls tennis: Newport pulls out 10-8 victory over Sunny Hills

NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s girls tennis doubles teams
won seven of nine sets and Kelly Nelson clinched the winning set in the
Sailors’ 10-8 nonleague victory over a highly-regarded Sunny Hills squad
on Wednesday at Newport.
The freshmen duo of Bonnie Adams and A.J. Olson swept their three sets
including an impressive 6-4 victory over Sunny Hills’ No. 1 team of
Michelle Esquivel and Katie Williams, who easily won their previous two
sets.
Newport, ranked No. 8 in Orange County, broke a 6-6 tie by sweeping
all three doubles set in the final rotation. Its top team of Megan
Hawkins and Erica Buder and the No. 2 team of Carmen and Diane Khoury
each took two of three sets.
The Sailors’ singles players won a set each. Krista McIntosh won her
first set, 6-4, against Molly Shin. Vanessa Dunlap took a 3-0 lead
against Shin and held on for a 7-4 tiebreaker victory.

Singles - Nelson (NH) lost to Kao, 1-6, def. Shin, 6-3, lost to
Cabanilla, 4-6; McIntosh (NH) lost 1-6, won 6-4, lost 4-6; Dunlap (NH)
lost 0-6, won 7-6 (7-4), lost 0-6.
Doubles - Hawkins-Buder (NH) lost to Esquivel-Williams, 2-6, def.
Kangwankij-Liang, 6-4, def. Chang-Farshdi, 6-1; C. Khoury-D. Khoury lost
1-6, won 6-1, 6-2; Adams-Olson (NH) won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
