TIMELINE

1945 - Born in Providence, R.I.

1963 - Graduated from high school in Cranston, R.I.

1967 - Graduated from the University of Arizona, enlisted in the

Marine Corps and was stationed in Quantico, Va.

1968 - Married Linda Barford, Arizona native

1969 - Discharged from the military and moved to California 1971 -

Son, Kevin, was born

1972 - Campaigned for the first time for a seat on the Huntington

Beach City Council and lost

1978 - Daughter, Nancy, was born

1981 - Formed his own corporation, David P. Garofalo & Associates

1990 - Became publisher of the Independent, a position he held for a

short time

1991 - Divorced

1992 - Started his own community newspaper, the Local News

1994 - Won seat on the Huntington Beach City Council

1998 - Won reelection bid and reportedly sold the Local News

publishing rights to his longtime friend, Ed Laird

1999 - Became mayor through rotation

2000 - Investigated by the Orange County district attorney’s office,

Orange County Grand Jury and the Fair Political Practices Commission
