1. You might be the designer of a California coin. Compete in “Design
a Quarter: Donate a Quarter” Friday through Sept. 30 at Borders stores in
Orange County. The U.S. Mint will choose the California coin’s design, as
part of the new state quarter series. Entry forms are available at
Borders Books, Music & Cafe South Coast Plaza, 3333 Bear St., Costa Mesa.
Proceeds from the quarter donations will benefit Free Arts for Abused
Children programs in the county. The cost is 25 cents per entry. (714)

2. For scooter fun and stunts with jumps, visit the Orange County Fair
& Exposition Center for the first day of “Scooter Series Hunter/Jumper
Show” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Equestrian Center, 88 Fair
Drive, Costa Mesa. Enter through Gate 8 off Arlington Drive. It continues

3. Prove that you’re word-savvy at a Scrabble tournament from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Newport Dunes RV Resort, off Jamboree Road in
Newport Beach. There is a $35 entry fee for preregistered participants.
