Girls tennis: Balboa Bay Racquet Club captures junior girls tennis
title
WESTWOOD - The Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club’s junior girls tennis
team captured the state title and the 12s Gar Glenney Cup Tennis
Championship this past weekend at UCLA.
Representing Southern California, Balboa Bay Club defeated the
Northern California team, 5-4. Tied at 4-4, sisters Hayley and Miranda
Young took the third set in tiebreaker to win, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, to give
Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club the championship.
During Saturday’s singles matches, Balboa Bay’s No. 1 player, Jill
Damion, won her match, 6-3, 6-1. Brittany Cluck, playing No. 5 singles,
pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory after a two-and-a-half hour match.
Megan McKay, at No. 6 singles, also won a three-set match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Sarah Geocaris lost, 7-6, 6-2, in No. 2 singles, and Brittany Sturgess
dropped her match, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, Damion and Geocaris teamed as Balboa Bay’s top entry and
they won, 6-3, 7-6. Balboa Bay’s No. 2 doubles team, Sturgess and Nora
Bugescu, lost, 6-2, 6-3.
