Girls golf: Estancia’s foursome the key

COSTA MESA - Estancia High’s girls golf roster is pretty well set.

It will be Anh Do, Trang Do, April Duch and Somer Flaherty. They are

Estancia’s four varsity girls golf players, listed from No. 1 to No. 4.

The Eagles have other golfers on junior varsity, but Coach Art Perry

is pretty sure that those four are the ones who could lead Estancia to

the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

“I think we’ve got a real good chance,” Perry said. “We’ve been

working hard all summer long. The girls played in four or five 18-hole

tournaments this summer. Our goal is to make the playoffs.”

Senior Anh Do is the lone returning varsity player and the clear

leader of the pack.

“I expect her to be a real consistent player,” Perry said. “She’s got

a consistent short game. She just needs more length off the tee. She’s

our captain, and she’s helping to guide the other girls in the right

direction.”

Her younger sister, Trang, saw some time on the varsity, but she made

her mark as the Eagles’ top JV player. Quiet on the course, Perry

describes Trang, a junior, as a strong player and a hard worker.

Duch, another junior, moves up from JV and has made rapid improvement,

according to Perry.

“She hits the ball a long way, she just has to work on her short

game,” said Perry.

Flaherty, a senior and Estancia’s top girls swimmer and water polo

player, rounds out the squad. She played many tournaments as a youth

golfer but hasn’t played since junior high. Nevertheless, Perry is

impressed with Flaherty’s driving range and putting skills.

With these four, Perry feels his team can compete with any team in the

Pacific Coast League except for the two behemoths, Corona del Mar and

University. But with Northwood, Costa Mesa and Laguna Beach, he expects a

dogfight for that last automatic playoff spot.

“We have a lot of room for improvement,” Perry said, “but we’ve been

out on the course every day. Our goal is to finish third and make the

playoffs, and I think we’ve got a good chance.”
