JIM DE BOOM -- Community & Clubs

The U.S. Navy patrol vessel Zephyr will be the first naval ship to

visit Newport Harbor since the U.S. destroyer Hale (DD-642) arrived on

Navy Day in 1946. The Zephyr will arrive at the harbor at 2 p.m. Aug. 25

and dock at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum. Coordinator Phil Glasgow

says the 179-foot, 328-ton ship will be open to the public for free

visits Aug. 25-26.

The Zephyr is one of 14 Cyclone class coastal patrol ships designed to

carry up to eight Navy SEALs to be covertly delivered and extracted from

foreign shores.

Expect some lines, but it will be well worth the wait.

BLUES ON THE BAY

The Sons of the American Legion are sponsoring a blues festival today

from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 291, 215 15th St., Newport Beach. Seven blues bands are being featured during the day, all

for the admission price of $15 per person. Food and beverages will be

American Legion. For tickets, call (949) 673-5070. Information: (949)

FLYING TO THE STARS

For local residents wanting to learn more about UFOs, a monthly

meeting sponsored by the Mutual UFO Network of Orange County will be held

at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center. The speaker at the 7:30

p.m. Aug. 23 meeting will be Canadian-based nuclear physicist Stanton

Friedman. His discussion is titled “Star Travel? -- Yes!” Friedman will

show that the conclusions of skeptics are based on a series of false

premises and that the stars are within our reach. The public is invited.

Cost is $13 for nonmembers and $8 for members and students. Information:

(714) 520-4UFO.

KIWANIS HELPS FAMILIES

Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club member Ray Stewart described at a recent club

meeting how the club-supported “Adopt a Social Worker Program” has

provided assistance to those seeking to get off welfare. A father for

four received a $150 gift certificate from The Home Depot for tools as he

starts a new job. Three families received $100 gift certificates to

Target for school clothes and $60 to help provide child care as the

program moves people from welfare to work.

WORTH REPEATING

From the Scuttlebutt, the publication of the Newport Beach-Corona del

Mar Kiwanis Club:

“Never deprive anyone of hope. It might be all he or she has.”
